EPE 2025 Power Electronics Hackathon

Mission

Power Electronics drives the electrified future and the EPE 2025 Power Electronics Hackathon is your chance to be part of that transformation. Using cutting-edge solutions provided by OwnTech Technologies, you will design and prototype innovative solutions in a collaborative and dynamic environment. Whether you aim to reproduce research or push the boundaries of innovation, this hackathon empowers your ideas to take center stage.

When does it happen?

  • January 27th – February 27th, 2025: Apply to participate in the Hackathon by submitting your innovative idea.
  • February 28th – March 31st, 2025: If your idea makes the cut, you receive participation confirmation. We’ll send you an OwnTech SPIN board and you can start preparing.
  • March 31st – April 1st, 2025: The Hackathon kicks off with two 10-hour development sessions from 8:30 to 18:30 at EPE 2025 in La Villette Congress Center.
  • April 3rd 2025: Presentations and award ceremony take place during the EPE 2025 Closing session (to be confirmed).

Where does it happen?

  • Registration: You get together a team and an idea and apply to participate.
  • Preliminary Development: Your idea is chosen and you receive an OwnTech SPIN board. You start working on your project remotely from your workspace, lab or home.
  • 2-day Hackathon: Held in person at the EPE 2025 in La Villette Congress Centre, Paris, France (see Conference venue).
  • Final Pitch and Award Ceremony: Conducted during the EPE 2025 Closing session (to be confirmed).

What will I work on?

Participants will use OwnTech’s fast-prototyping technology suite to develop creative solutions in power electronics. Projects can:

  1. Build from current conference topics: electromobility use-cases, smart-grid applications, energy cycling diagnosis, AI applications using embedded sensors, power converter models.
  2. Or Integrate to your ideas: Use creativity with the OwnTech boards to showcase a new great idea!

Who can apply?

Master Students, PhD students, and post-doc attending the EPE 2025 Conference are welcome to apply. If you feel inspired, you are encouraged to join this exciting event. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be 18 years or older.
  2. Engage yourself to take all necessary precautions to safely operate the provided power electronics equipment.

How do I register?

Registration is a two-step process:

  1. Click on the subscription link to submit your proposal: submit your idea or project until February 27th, 2025
  2. Selection and confirmation: Selected participants will be notified by March 15th, 2025, and will receive the necessary tools, including the OwnTech SPIN board to begin development.

Is there a fee?

Participation is free for all Master Students, PhD students, and post-doc already registered in the EPE 2025 conference. Selected participants will receive access to OwnTech’s technology and support at no cost. Meals and refreshments will be provided during the Hackathon.

Do I need to work alone?

No! Teams of three to five members are expected. Ensure your team has a diverse skill set to tackle various aspects of your project effectively. Individuals are also invited to participate. They will team up with other individuals or incomplete teams. In this last case, notifications will be sent.

Will I receive support?

Yes! Throughout the Hackathon, participants will have access to:

  1. OwnTech Mentors: Experts will provide technical guidance and answer your questions. Find them at the OwnTech Discord Server.
  2. Hackathon Resources: User guides and open-source examples provided by OwnTech.
  3. Community Support: Engage with peers and mentors through the OwnTech Discord server.

How will projects be evaluated?

Projects will be judged by a panel of experts based on the following criteria:

  1. Creativity: How unique and innovative is your idea?
  2. Impact: What is the potential scale and relevance of your project?
  3. Execution: How well is the project implemented and presented?
  4. Applicability: How straightforward is it to adopt or extend your solution?

What can I win?

The team of the top projects will be awarded:

  • First Prize: €1.200,00
  • Second Prize: €600,00
  • Third Prize: €200,00

Winners will also receive recognition during the EPE 2025 Conference and certificates of participation.
